“It’s very exciting to be writing the roadmap for a sustainable world.”

Yola Carlough is a radiant voice for sustainability through her work activating the power of business for positive social and environmental change. As senior leadership with the Benefit Corporation movement, former Director of Sustainability at Burt’s Bees and Director of Social Mission at Ben & Jerry's, Yola has been a pioneer of possibility working to redefine business as a force for good.

While at Burt’s Bees, Carlough’s great work ultimately led the company to achieve the remarkable accomplishment of zero-waste-to-landfill. She also served as Executive Director of the Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundation, where she worked to create meaningful partnerships with not-for-profit organizations driving innovative change to eliminate the root cause of social and environmental problems.

During her years at Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, Yola managed ground-breaking environmental and socially conscious directions for the company’s domestic and international business. Now at B Lab, the not-for-profit championing the B Corp movement, Yola is growing momentum for a sustainable economy by supporting businesses that commit to the highest standards of transparency, accountability and performance around the globe.

In this interview Yola explains how business is the missing link to address the root causes of our greatest social and environmental problems. With inspired clarity, Yola articulates the restorative leadership principle of scaling across shared values as she invites us to consider how the government, not-for-profit and business sectors can create meaningful collaboration around the world, sparking global celebration and a sustainable future.

B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to your coffee or USDA Organic certification is to your veggies.

Today, there is a growing community of thousands of Certified B Corps from countries and industries around the world working together toward 1 unifying goal: to redefine success in business.

Drawing on best practices from 100+ B Corps, The B Corp Handbook: How to Use Business as a Force for Good by Ryan Honeyman shows that using business as a force for good can help distinguish your company in a crowded market, attract and retain the best employees, and increase customer trust, loyalty, and evangelism for your brand.
